Christmas Cardinal Picture

Make this lovely picture for your own home, or for a gift for someone special!  I've heard that the appearance of a real cardinal in your life indicates that an angel is looking down on you! Thus, if you believe that this would be a wonderful tribute of sympathy and remembrance; simply change the sentiment to one of sympathy or a Bible verse.

I started with a white, wide edged picture frame that was clearance priced at a discount store. The center mat size is 8" x 8".

The back mat is just over 8" square to hold the picture in the frame. The paper I used there was a black buffalo plaid. I created this using the Buffalo Check background stamp from Stampin' Up and Memento black ink pad. You could use the buffalo check stamp that is included in the Tiny Keepsakes stamp set from our Holiday Catalog. This might be easier to use if you are a beginner.

The second mat is made from a piece of Real Red card stock cut to 7" x 7". I frequently like to conserve paper when using larger pieces by cutting out the center. Simply cut out only enough that the hole can be covered with the picture. That step is optional.

The picture is now created using the Toile Christmas Stamp and Dies bundle featured in our 2019 Holiday Catalog. The paper is a piece of Whisper White card stock cut to 6 1/2" x 6 1/2".
Using Crumb Cake ink I began in the center of my paper stamping the first cardinal and then stamped one more above, and one more below, centering them in reference to the first cardinal and the edges of the paper. Next stamp the branches using the stamp in this set.  I colored the leaves using the Stampin' Blends in Daffodil Yellow Light, Garden Green Light and Real Red Light. Use just a touch of all colors on each leaf to achieve a fall/winter look. Color all the berries red. Stamp a small piece of the branch on Whisper White, color the berries and leaves as above. Cut this branch with the die in this bundle and set it aside.

Then stamp another cardinal on a scrap of Real Red card stock, approximately 5" x 2", stamped in Memento black ink.  Stamp one more cardinal on a scrap of Whisper White. Cut both of these cardinals with the die from the Toile Christmas bundle. On the white cardinal use Daffodil Yellow Light Blend and color the beak and the feet. when they are dry, cut both yellow pieces and glue them on top of the beak and feet of your red cardinal.

Glue a small piece of the branch you die cut to the back side of your red cardinal making it appear that it is caring it in its mouth. Attach several dimensionals to the back of this cardinal and attach it to your picture directly above the middle cardinal.  You should just have an occasional glimpse of the brown stamped cardinal giving an appearance of shadow.

With a piece of Whisper White card stock, cut to 2" x 1 1/2", stamp with Real Red ink using the "May the season" stamp.  Adhere that sentiment to a piece of Real Red card stock that is cut to 2 1/8" x 1 5/8". Adhere this red piece (with the sentiment above it) to a piece of Basic Black card stock that is 2 1/4" x 1 3/4". Attach this sentiment with dimensionals to the lower right hand of your picture so that it is near the lower cardinal and barely over the edge of the picture.

Because of the pieces raised with dimensionals, I chose to put the glass from the frame behind the Buffalo Check mat and then put the entire piece in your frame.
